Smart home set-up guide: speakers, lights, cameras and Matter
How to choose a smart home ecosystem, what the Matter standard means, why Wi-Fi coverage matters, and how to keep cameras and devices secure.

Smart speakers, lights, plugs, doorbells and cameras can make a home easier to run, or turn it into a puzzle of apps that only one person understands. A little planning keeps it simple.
Pick one main ecosystem
Most homes work best with one main system to control everything, such as Apple Home, Google Home or Amazon Alexa. Choose the one that fits the phones and speakers your household already uses.
What Matter means
Matter is a smart home standard backed by the major platforms, including Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung, through the Connectivity Standards Alliance. Devices that support Matter are designed to work across those ecosystems, which makes it easier to mix brands and to switch platforms later. Look for the Matter logo when buying new devices.
Good Wi-Fi comes first
Smart devices are only as reliable as the network they sit on. Doorbells and cameras at the edge of the house are common trouble spots. Fix coverage first; see Wi-Fi dead spots.
Keep it secure
- Change default passwords and use the manufacturer's app to keep firmware updated.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication for the main smart home account.
- Think about where cameras point, and check local rules on recording neighbours or public areas.
- Remove devices from your account before selling or giving them away.
