Cafe sound systems: getting background music right

How to set up background music in a cafe so it lifts the room without drowning out conversation: speaker placement, volume, zones and the gear that lasts.

· 2 min read

Music in a cafe should be felt more than heard. Too quiet and the room feels empty; too loud and customers lean in to talk, then leave sooner. The good news is that getting it right is more about placement and control than expensive gear.

More speakers, lower volume

One or two loud speakers create hot spots near them and dead spots everywhere else. Several smaller speakers spread evenly, each playing quietly, give the whole room the same gentle level. This is the single biggest improvement most cafes can make.

  • Space ceiling or wall speakers evenly over the seating area.
  • Keep speakers away from the counter so staff can hear orders.
  • Avoid pointing speakers straight at tables near windows, where sound bounces off the glass.

Set a sensible maximum

Ask your technician to set a volume limit at the amplifier so the music can never be pushed past a comfortable level. Staff can still turn it down, or up within the limit, from a simple wall control or app.

Think in zones

Many cafes benefit from at least two zones: the seating area and the counter or kitchen. Outdoor seating is often a third. Each zone gets its own volume, so the courtyard can be a little louder than the quiet corner inside. Read more in music zones explained.

Choose gear built for all-day use

Home stereo equipment is not designed to play ten or more hours a day, every day. Commercial amplifiers and speakers are built for it and are easier to service. Your technician can explain the difference between the common speaker types.

Sort out the music source and licensing

Personal streaming accounts are generally licensed for personal use only. Businesses usually need a business music service and a public performance licence. See playing music in your business for the details.
